What is postoperative care?<\/h2>\n \n

Postoperative care is the type of home care service provided after a surgical procedure.<\/p>\n \n \n

The type of postoperative care you will receive will depend on the type of surgery you have had, alongside your general overall health \u2013 often including physio, pain management, and day-to-day support at home. This begins in the hospital and then can often continue after you\u2019ve been discharged and returned home.<\/p>\n

Your doctor should give you comprehensive instructions before you\u2019re discharged regarding what to expect upon returning home, and there is a\u00a0Clinical Nurse Specialist<\/a>\u00a0in every area who can be called on for medical advice. But it\u2019s also important to ask questions, or to have someone ask questions on your behalf if necessary.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n \n

Postoperative care at home<\/h2>\n \n

Depending on circumstances, postoperative care can be given in the comfort of home.<\/p>\n \n \n

For some minor procedures that don\u2019t require a hospital stay, you can return home and receive any support you need. If you are required to stay in hospital for a period of time \u2013 after a more serious procedure, for instance \u2013 the beginnings of your recovery will be as an inpatient and then often continue when you are at home.<\/p>\n
